Is your trainer always telling you to breathe? Well, here are a few good reasons to make sure you are:

Holding your breath can cause vision and voice problems. The eyes need oxygen just like the rest of the body, without it they can malfunction, and the voice relies on the throat being open and relaxed, lack of oxygen can restrict and tighten the throat.

One study showed that holding your breath during stomach crunches opposed to resistance training caused a significant increase in blood pressure.

Without it we would die, but to increase the usefulness of oxygen, make sure you breathe during those physically or emotionally demanding times as well.

You hear it all the time from trainers or the person on the DVD, “breathe in and breathe out”. If you are breathing why does it matter when you do it? Well… below are three really good reasons to make sure you breathe steadily during exercise.

1) Oxygen does not just go to your lungs, but to your cells and the cells in your muscles need to stay fuelled so that you can exercise them.

2) The best part about breathing properly during exercise is that it can actually make it feel easier. Ever try a push up while holding your breath? It’s hard! But if you inhale on the way down and exhale on the way up, the whole thing becomes much easier. Exhaling during the hard phase of an exercise actually helps us execute the exercise more efficiently because during an exhale our diaphragm contracts to stabilize our core unit making us more stable all over.

3) A build up of oxygen from holding our breath (especially during super hard exercises) can actually cause permanent damage to our lung tissue.

KEEP BREATHING!

Running, walking, hiking, or any other outdoor activity can become very dangerous in the winter. With snow and ice on the ground slipping is a common occurrence. Keep your body tense in an attempt to stay standing can also cause some added muscle strain. So try putting some spikes on your shoes! Also called traction aids, these simple shoe spikes that slips over top of your regular shoes can provide that needed grip for outdoor activities.

Get a pair from the Running Room, $24.99-$39.99

Do Bamboo is a local company that Fly Girl Fitness bootcampers may recognize. Why? Because it’s just down the street! Located on the west side of Coxwell Ave. just a few doors North of Danforth Ave. this company not only offers great products but is just a hop skip and jump from our location (so you could stop in after bootcamp).

Do Bamboo is dedicated to products made primarily of bamboo – a sustainable resource that just keeps proving how amazing it can be. Not only does this plant grow and grow and grow but it makes soft, very usable materials. Do Bamboo offers products as varied as bed linens to forks!

This month we are looking at work out wear and Do Bamboo sells some comfortable bamboo clothing. We knew they were close by, but we hadn’t done much investigation into the company itself. So, we took a closer look. Founded only in 2006, Do Bamboo began as an online store, but soon opened the Coxwell/Danforth location. A young company, Do Bamboo is working towards offering quality products that we can actually afford and are moving towards more of their items coming from local suppliers. On top of that, they are dedicated to giving back to their community by supporting organizations such as World Vision and Variety Village.

So… this month we salute a fellow independent business that is about community rather than salary and hope that we can continue to support their growing efforts at local, sustainable products.

Check them out here http://www.dobamboo.com
